Surface Grafting
Term: Surface Grafting
Category: Coating Method
Definition:
Surface Grafting is a technique for the permanent chemical modification of the surface of a substrate (the material that supports another) without changing the properties of the bulk substrate. In the case of Surface Grafting, molecules, or polymer chains (polymers) with functional groups on both ends, are covalently bonded to the substrate surface, hence forming a modified layer that is covalently bonded to the substrate as a result of the grafting process. Using surface grafting allows for accurate control of all aspects of the surface chemistry, wettability, charge, biocompatibility, and resistance against fouling of surfaces.
