Definition: Stimuli-responsive coatings, also known as smart coatings. They are special surface treatments designed to change their properties when exposed to certain triggers. These triggers can include changes in temperature, pH levels, light, enzymes, or mechanical stress. The coatings are made from materials like responsive polymers, hydrogels, or composites that can change in ways such as swelling, breaking down, releasing drugs, or changing color.
