Plasma Treatment
Term: Plasma Treatment
Category: Coating method
Definition: Plasma treatment is an approach to modifying the surface of materials through the use of a plasma. The plasma is composed of partially ionized gas (a mixture of ions, energetic electrons, and other reactive species). A matrix surface can be treated by the removal of dirt, etch surfaces, or chemically altered by adding chemical reactants (hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amine functional groups) to the matrix surface.
Common Uses:
- Enhancing adhesion of hydrophilic or protective coatings on polymers, metals, or glass
- Cleaning and sterilizing medical devices and implants
- Surface functionalization for biocompatibility and tissue engineering
