Orthopedic Implant
Term: Orthopedic Implant
Category: Medical Devices
Definition: An orthopedic implant is a device used to help restore the function and strength of bones and joints. An orthopedic implant is composed of metals, ie, titanium, stainless steel, and a select few types of plastics. Orthopedics use implants (reconstruction, a male figurative bone, to replace a damaged joint, reestablish weakness, and deformities). Some implants have a surface created to allow bone to grow on their surface or to minimize the chance of being infected. Examples are plates, screws, rods, joint replacements, and spinal implants.
Uses:
- Fixing broken bones with plates, screws, or nails.
- Replacing joints like hips, knees, shoulders, or ankles.
- Stabilizing the spine with rods and cages.
- Repairing bone defects with grafts or engineered implants.
