Definition: A synthetic polyamide polymer commonly used as a substrate in medical and industrial applications.  It is very strong, resists many chemicals, and stays stable at high temperatures. Because of these qualities, nylon is a good surface for hydrophilic coatings and antimicrobial coatings. 

Structure: Repeating amide units (–[NH–(CH)n–CO]–) forming linear or semi-crystalline chains

Common Uses: 

  • Commonly used in biomedical applications for surgical sutures, catheters, and tubing due to its strength and biocompatibility. 
  • Other uses include manufacturing components for implants, prosthetics, and surgical instruments, as well as in drug delivery systems and as medical textiles.
