Definition: An intravenous (IV) cannula is a small, flexible tube that is inserted into a person’s vein through a needle. After the needle is placed into the vein, the plastic tube remains in the vein, and the needle is removed, leaving a secure connection for IV access.
Cannulas come in different lengths and diameters depending on the medical purpose for which they will be used. Many modern Cannulas have design features that prevent needle-stick injuries and help prevent bloodborne infections.
Uses:
- Providing fluids for hydration or replacing lost fluids.
- Giving medicines like antibiotics or painkillers.
- Collecting blood for tests.
- Transfusing blood or plasma.
