Hydrophobicity
Term: Hydrophobicity
Category: Functional Properties of Coatings
Definition: Hydrophobicity is when a molecule, material, or surface pushes water away or does not mix with it. Hydrophobic substances usually do not have polar parts and instead have nonpolar parts, so they cannot form hydrogen bonds with water. Because of this, water tends to form small beads on hydrophobic surfaces (showing a large contact angle) instead of spreading out.
