Hydrophilicity
Term: Hydrophilicity
Category: Functional Properties of Coatings
Definition: Hydrophilicity is a property that makes a molecule or surface attracted to water. A hydrophilic substance has parts that are polar or carry an electric charge. These parts can form hydrogen bonds, which are weak attractions, with water molecules. Because of this, hydrophilic materials often absorb water, let water spread out across them, and sometimes dissolve or swell when put in water.
