Hemocompatibility
Term: Hemocompatibility
Category: Performance Features
Definition: A hemocompatible material preserves standard blood function and composition when in contact with blood. Blood is sensitive to foreign material, so anytime a surface (catheter, stent, heart valve, dialysis membrane, etc.) is used with blood, it should be structured to prevent protein adsorption, platelet activation, and inflammatory responses. Hemocompatibility thus represents a sub-category of biocompatibility in relation to biomaterials and blood.
