Epoxy
Term: Epoxy
Category: Chemistry
Definition: An epoxy is a chemical that contains an epoxide group, which is a three-membered cyclic ether made up of two carbon atoms and one oxygen atom. It will react with an appropriate curing agent (amines, anhydrides, thiols, etc.) to create thermosetting polymers referred to as “epoxy resins”.
Epoxies cure to form a highly crosslinked network with extremely high mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and durability.
Common Uses:
- High-performance adhesives and protective coatings
- Biomedical coatings and device encapsulation materials
- Composites and structural materials
- Crosslinking agents in hydrogels, resins, and medical device polymers
