Definition: An endoscope is a medical tool with a camera and light that allows healthcare professionals to look inside the body without major surgery. The device consists of a long, thin device made up of either a rigid or flexible tube, which contains both a light source and digital sensors, as well as access ports for instruments. Healthcare providers utilize endoscopes in order to take pictures and inspect the internal organs, including the digestive system, lungs, kidneys and bladder, and joints.
Uses:
- Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: Examining the esophagus, stomach, and colon (e.g., gastroscopy, colonoscopy).
- Bronchoscopy: Viewing the airways and lungs.
- Ureteroscopy: Accessing the urinary tract to address stones or blockages.
