Contact Lens
Term: Contact Lens
Category: Medical Device
Definition: Contact lenses are a type of optical aid, and can be worn on either the cornea or scleral surface of the eye. They can be used for vision correction, cosmetics, or as therapy delivery devices.
Contact lenses are made out of hydrogels or silicone hydrogels that allow oxygen to pass through, so as to keep the cornea healthy. Some contact lenses are also designed specifically for rigid gas-permeable (RGP) vision correction. In addition, there are several optional features that modern contact lenses may have, including drug-eluting kits, UV filters, and antimicrobial agents.
