Carboxyl Groups
Term: Carboxyl Groups
Abbreviation: (-COOH)
Category: Chemistry
Definition: The carboxyl functional group (–COOH) contains a carbonyl (C=O) and hydroxyl (–OH) functional group, which is found on carboxylic acids. The carboxyl functional groups are polar, so they are capable of donating a proton (H⁺) and, therefore, they are weak acids. The incorporation of carboxyl groups into the structures of polymers or biomaterials will increase the hydrophilicity, surface charge, and chemical reactivity of the polymer or biomaterial. In the case of ionic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and covalent coupling, the carboxyl group is the main site of interaction. The carboxyl group greatly affects the solubility, adhesion, and biocompatibility of the polymer or biomaterial.
