Definition: The ability of a material or device to perform its intended function without eliciting a harmful or adverse reaction when introduced into the body. In other words, a biocompatible material is one that can exist within the biological environment without causing toxicity, immunogenicity, or other harmful effects to the tissues, cells, or organs it interacts with.
